Medical Laboratory Scientist
Job Summary
The Medical Laboratory Scientist will be responsible for performing a wide range of laboratory investigations to support accurate diagnosis and quality patient care. The ideal candidate will have strong technical expertise, particularly in microbiology, and a solid background in quality management systems (QMS) and ISO 15189 standards. The role demands a high level of professionalism, accuracy, and commitment to continuous quality improvement.
Key Responsibilities:
Laboratory Testing and Analysis
Perform routine and specialized laboratory tests in microbiology, hematology, biochemistry, serology, and other relevant disciplines.
Ensure accurate, timely, and reliable test results for patient diagnosis and treatment.
Maintain proper documentation of all laboratory activities in accordance with standard protocols.
Microbiology Focus
Conduct culture, sensitivity, and identification tests for bacterial, fungal, and other pathogens.
Ensure appropriate specimen handling, media preparation, and quality control in microbiology operations.
Support infection prevention and control activities through accurate laboratory surveillance.
Quality Management Systems (QMS)
Implement and maintain QMS in accordance with ISO 15189 requirements.
Participate in internal quality audits, corrective actions, and continuous improvement initiatives.
Maintain and monitor internal and external quality control programs.
Laboratory Equipment and Safety
Operate, calibrate, and maintain laboratory equipment in good working condition.
Ensure compliance with biosafety and occupational health standards.
Report equipment malfunctions and assist in troubleshooting and maintenance.
Documentation and Reporting
Maintain complete and accurate laboratory records.
Contribute to the development and review of standard operating procedures (SOPs).
Support data analysis and reporting for clinical audits and quality reviews.
Qualifications and Experience:
Minimum Education: Bachelor’s degree in Medical Laboratory Science or equivalent.
Professional Registration: Must be registered with the Allied Health Professions Council (or relevant regulatory body).
Specialization: Expertise or strong experience in microbiology is an added advantage.
Experience: At least 3–5 years of post-qualification experience in a clinical or diagnostic laboratory setting.
Technical Expertise: Demonstrated knowledge and practical application of Quality Management Systems and ISO 15189 standards.
Skills and Competencies:
Strong analytical and diagnostic skills.
Excellent attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.
Good knowledge of laboratory safety and infection control practices.
Strong organizational and documentation skills.
Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
Good communication and interpersonal skills.
